Hershey's Extra Dark Chocolate {Drool Worthy No Guilt Giveaway} 2 Winners

GIVEAWAY HAS ENDED
The Best Life Treat Seal of Approval is awarded to treats that feature a portion size of 150 calories or less, are free of partially hydrogenated oil, meet sodium and other nutrition criteria and/or have another plus, such as the antioxidants in dark chocolate. Hershey®’s Extra Dark Chocolate is the only chocolate to receive the Best Life Treat Seal of Approval. Woo Hoo!!!

For those that prefer a more mild dark chocolate try Hershey®’s Special Dark®, this is one my Hubby's all time favorites! Me? I love my Hershey®’s Extra Dark thank ya very much, well to be honest, I haven't met a Hershey's I didn't LoVe! ;)

Why do I always say Dark Chocolate is so good for ya? Cause it's loaded with antioxidants! No, this is not just an excuse to indulge in a bar of chocolate, although it's a good one, dont'cha think? :) So what is an antioxidant?

Antioxidants are compounds that help neutralize free radicals and protect your body against their destructive effects. Flavanol Antioxidants occur naturally in some plant-based foods, such as tea, grapes, blueberries, cranberries and cocoa beans. Cocoa beans are the base ingredient of all chocolate products. Interestingly, on a gram for gram basis, cocoa (ground cocoa beans from which some of the cocoa butter has been removed) is one of the most concentrated natural sources of flavanols.

LUCKY US!! Now I don't wanna bore ya with all the scientific mumbo jumbo, but I think it's really important for y'all to know why I am so gung ho on my dark chocolate and why it really is a guilt free indulgence {in moderation of course ;) }

Data from the recent study sponsored by The Hershey Company and previous data from USDA and others indicate that dark chocolate is one of the most concentrated sources of flavanol antioxidants among plant foods. The antioxidant capacity of 1 serving of HERSHEY'S EXTRA DARK dark chocolate (37g) is equal to 3 cups of tea, 2 glasses of red wine or 1 1/3 cups of blueberries.

In terms of ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), which is a measure of the amount of antioxidant capacity in a food or substance, a standard serving of dark chocolate (37g) provides more antioxidant power than the standard servings of many other well-known antioxidant-containing foods, including blueberries, walnuts and raisins.

I was Blessed to receive a yummy assortment of Hershey®’s Extra Dark & Hershey®’s Special Dark® Chocolate which I grudgingly lovingly shared with my family cause that's the kinda gal I am! ;)

Here's just a sample of the generous goodies we got to try!!

I love these Extra Dark Chocolate portion controlled little suckers! These are totally decadent and you can have one and then toss the bag up on the highest shelf until tomorrow, or errr later! ;)

Hubby snagged every single one of these! Told ya he loved these! They found their way into his lunch boxes, that sly dog! hahah!

Fruit and Extra Dark Chocolate! This is HEALTH FOOD! :) Almost Sooooo incredibly delicious I had to tell my Hubby to take this away from me! Dark Chocolate really is MY THING! NO LIE! :)
Are ya'll drooling on your keyboards? I thought so? Well, stay tuned cause my good friends at Hershey's didn't leave My Leslie Loves Veggies Readers out! ;)

Ok, I love ALL dark chocolate. So much so that my 3yo niece says "I ate YOUR dark chocolate". (Tho last week when she came, she brought enough for BOTH of us! Yes, I have a small child eating the stuff.) It is my feeling though that you can never go wrone when you mix chocolate and nuts, so I choose the Dark nuggets with almonds!

I learned
Licorice and Glycyrrhizic Acid
Licorice - the Plant
The licorice plant, known scientifically as Glycyrrhiza, grows wild in the southern central Europe and Asia. The underground stems (also called rhizomes) and root of the licorice plant have been used since ancient times to flavor and sweeten candies, teas, throat and cough lozenges, pharmaceuticals, and other products. Much of the sweetness comes from a substance called glycyrrhizic acid (also known as glycyrrhizin) found in the licorice plant.

Licorice - the Candy
Traditionally, "licorice candy" referred to a chewy candy with a distinctive flavor which came from licorice root extract. Today, consumers recognize licorice more as a general description of candy that may be available in a variety of flavors.

Not all of today's licorice-type candies are flavored with licorice root extract. Some licorice-flavored candies may be flavored with anise oil instead of licorice extract. Other fruit-flavored candies may be commonly referred to as licorice candy, but do not contain any licorice extract. For example, while people may consider all TWIZZLERS Candy to be licorice candy, the strawberry, chocolate, and cherry-flavored TWIZZLERS Candy do not contain licorice extract. TWIZZLERS black licorice candy is flavored with both licorice extract and anise oil.

Those licorice candies which contain licorice root extract will typically declare either "licorice extract" or "licorice root extract" as an ingredient on the package.

Licorice - Glycyrrhizic Acid
Glycyrrhizic acid is a substance which occurs naturally in the licorice root and is about fifty times as sweet as sugar. In excessive amounts, glycyrrhizic acid has been associated with undesirable side-effects including headache, sodium and water retention, loss of potassium, high blood pressure, and heart irregularities.
