We’ve probably all heard about the dangers of some jewelry produced in China, especially for children who may put it in their mouths. First it was high lead content. Then when U.S. import rules on lead became stricter, they substituted a more dangerous element, cadmium in place of the lead. A good reason to purchase jewelry and other items from U.S. manufacturers is because you can normally rest assured that they must meet at least minimum requirements to protect workers, consumers and the environment.

Rather than being in the dark about the metal content of your jewelry, look for items that are “Sterling Silver” or marked with “.925”. Sterling Silver is 92.5% pure silver with the addition of what is usually 7.5% copper to make the mixture strong enough to cast. You don’t have to worry about lead, cadmium, or nickel (something that many people are allergic to). It must be “Sterling Silver,” since the word “Silver” just refers to a color, not the metal content.

Charm Factory charms and beads are .925 sterling silver and manufactured in the United States, all lead and nickel free. Their pewter charms are also nickel and lead free. Charm Factory products do not contain cadmium. The jump rings attached to pewter charms do contain a small amount of nickel.
