Personal Microderm ~ At-Home Microdermabrasion System {Review}

  • Sharebar

I’m 49 and my skin is pretty good overall.  While I would love to indulge in a few Microdermabrasion sessions with my Dermatologist, I know how incredibly expensive they are and just cannot justify the expense.  I’ve pondered the idea of home microdermabrasion but never found a system or product that seemed right for me, until recently!

I was Blessed to receive a PMD Personal Microderm for review.

PMD Personal Microderm

Sometimes microdermabrasion scrubs, creams and potions simply are not enough.  That’s when it’s time for the Personal Microderm At-Home Microdermabrasion System. Now you can have effective home microdermabrasion without having to schedule expensive, time-consuming appointments at the Dermatologist.

My kit arrived and I was very very excited to use it.  I was asked to watch the eight minute instructional video prior to use, which I did, three times!  HaHaHa  Even still I was overzealous and I had three red irritated spots on my face for four days.  Although the Personal Microderm ~ At-Home Microdermabrasion System comes with a video, I think a booklet would be extremely helpful.  The website says a pamphlet is included, mine didn’t include one.  I’m the type of person who likes to read as I go along.

After my initial experience I was a little nervous about using the system again, but decided I would give it one more whirl before I gave up on it.  (I’m tenacious that way!)  I’m glad I did!  I realized that I was holding the wand in one place too long instead of gently gliding it along the skin. I was also pressing the wand into my skin, which you don’t need to do.

The system includes 1 personal microderm, 5 exfoliating discs (2 green and 3 blue), 1 electric cord (Standard U.S. Outlet), 1 facial cap, 1 body cap, 1 reusable filter, Instructional CD and Pamphlet.  Since everyone has a different skin type it ‘s important to test your skin to see how your skin will react to the Personal Microderm.  I use the blue discs which are the correct discs for sensitive skin.  The green disc is a coarser grit of aluminum oxide crystals and is great for aggressive treatments and thicker skin.

PMD Personal Microderm

The Personal Microderm is extremely easy to use.  I wash and dry my face prior to use, plug in the wand, select the correct disc and begin. The larger disc is great for your forhead, cheeks and body.  Yes!  You can use the PMD on elbows, feet, hands, wherever you have rough dry skin.  For smaller areas, such as around the nose and mouth, simply pop on the small disc and corresponding cap.

Some things I learned that are super super important:

  • Pull your skin taut!  This is a must.  It helps the Personal Microderm glide easier and not get ‘stuck’ in one place.  A vacuum is created when you apply the wand to your skin.  If you hover over one spot too long you will receive an abrasion, which will form a scab.  you do not want that.
  • Move the wand across and upward in a straight line over the face.  You will see a line where you’ve already treated.  I can go across the same several times on my forehead.  On my cheeks, one swipe is all I need, but that is my sensitive area.  Avoid the eye area!  When done properly my skin is left with a light glow and feels fabulous.  I attended a Bridal Shower this weekend and one of my friends remarked that I had ‘porcelain skin’!  Imagine that!  :)
  • Wash your face after the treatment.  I wait a few hours or overnight to apply a toner and recovery moisturizer or serum as my face is too sensitive to apply immediately after use.  Do not skip this step though.  Toner prepares your skin for other products you are going to be applying.  A great moisturizer or serum is a must as well.  These products work in conjunction with your Personal Microderm.  I consider them part of the entire treatment.  The Personal Microderm System includes a small tube of M2 Skin Refinish and M2 Skin Recovery Moisturizer.  Whatever great products you have at home will work too!
  • I am not a sun worshiper.  But for those of you that are, use of the PMD will make your skin photosensitive for a few days.  Be sure to use sun block.
  • I love the results!  For the first few months, use the PMD every week.  (The video suggests you wait 5-6 days between treatments).  Then scale back to 2-3 times monthly and for maintenance, treat your skin monthly.
  • Don’t forget to replace your discs!  They are coated with aluminum oxide crystals and will need to be replaced after three treatments or so, depending on the condition of your skin and how long your treatment lasts. Personal Microderm Replacement discs can be purchased by clicking HERE.

I believe the Personal Microderm is a fabulous skin care tool and I’m going to keep using it.  My skin, which was extremely dry and flaky is becoming normalized.  I really believe it’s because the dead skin cells are being removed and it’s easier for my products to really penetrate the skin.  I have an area of discoloration on my upper right cheek that’s slowly fading and without the use of chemicals.  I’ve noticed my fine lines are becoming less noticeable too!  The Personal Microderm can be purchased online at SkinCareRx for $179.00
