When I was a little girl my Mom and Dad would load the car up with pillows, blankets, toys and snacks and we would take the very long car ride from Long Island, New York to Indianapolis, Indiana every summer to visit my Gramma!  We would leave in the middle of the night for some reason and drive like banshees to ‘make time’ as my Dad would say.  Oh the memories.  My sister and I had such a good time.  I remember all the games we played in the car and how we looked forward to driving over bridges and through tunnels!  Hard to believe my that first trip to Indiana was about 45 years ago and I still remember it!

As fun as our trips were, they were never planned, were very disorganized and my memories make me laugh at some of the hilarious antics that took place.  Remember back in the 1960′s there was no such thing as a GPS or internet.  My parents never planned ahead, we just hit the open road on a wing and a prayer and a tank of gas!

Emily Kaufman has these great tips to make your road trip a real hit:

Plan ahead. Create a packing list two weeks before the scheduled vacation, followed by a trip to the store to purchase needed items. Then, begin packing two or three days before leaving. Finally, pack the car the night before taking off. Spacing out preparation will let you get right to enjoying time with your family.

Be realistic. No matter how old your kids are (or even the adults) leaving before dawn isn’t a good idea. HaHaHa!  Tell my Mom and Dad this!  Drivers need plenty of rest before getting behind the wheel. Consider departing after breakfast once rush hour traffic has eased.  Tsk Tsk!  My Dad would have been a wreck if we left later than 3 am!

Create a boredom bag. Convert a hanging travel cosmetic case into a case full of fun and hang it from the seat back in front of the kids’ seats. Fill each pocket with age-appropriate activities that will keep them occupied and organized. Consider creating fun works of art with Twizzlers Pull ‘n’ Peel® Candy before snacking on them!

Think of creative solutions to best use the space you have. For example, try packing a cookie sheet – it will make a great table for snacks or a desktop for writing or coloring. They’re durable and easy to store in the car.

Take your trip “online.” From GPS systems to phone applications, trips are no longer a navigation nightmare. Also, there are a wide variety of portable DVD players, gaming systems and phone games to keep the kids happy. Make sure to download movies and games that everyone will enjoy.

Think through the snacks you pack. Avoid packing snacks that are easy to spill like juice boxes or snacks that melt. Try plastic bottles with sports tops or lids that can be tightly sealed for drinks. Pack a first aid kit. Include basics like band aids, pain relievers, wet wipes and anti-bacterial ointment, “just in case.” It should be small enough to tuck right under one of the seats and will be there when you need it.
