Finding Balance
TAMING YOUR INNER TYRANT by Patty de Llosa
GIVEAWAY HAS ENDED
Balance is not a fixed position we need to find so we can then stay there. On the contrary, unlike our four—footed companions, it is a never—ending challenge for two—footed creatures like us. So to find balance we must begin again to seek it at every new moment. Whether walking or standing or even sitting, that means a constantly changing readjustment. You could even say that finding balance is like finding harmony. It’s a result of being well tuned. But like any instrument, we have to tune ourselves every little while as we play through the adventures of living.
Harmonious balancing, that’s what we seek: a way to meet the world and ourselves as we go through the joys and trials of each day. So when I’m feeling blue or out of sorts, it helps to reassure myself that neither harmony nor balance is anything but a temporary place. The best thing to do is ask, what’s missing right now?
Maybe my mind is wandering all the way to China, far from my body’s activity. I may complain about the body’s limitations—it can only do only one thing at a time. But that’s really a blessing, not a curse. It brings me back to reality, to the move I’m making and the place I’m standing Here and Now.
Or perhaps I’m off—kilter because my emotions are on a rampage, as they react to what’s just happened, what someone just said or did or didn’t say or do. I may be looking for a way to project my feelings on someone or something else.
How about taming the adrenalin and harnessing the mind to focus on NOW? That’s an invitation to live in the present moment, neither occupied in reorganizing yesterday’s mistakes nor in solving tomorrow’s demands. Today asks for all my attention. And, ahh, it feels so good to be here.
Oops, yes, it only lasts a mini-second before more balancing, more harmonizing of the instrument I am is required in order to be present to my life. How come it doesn’t last? I’ve made a very subtle effort to get there, then I sit down inside myself, full of satisfaction that I’ve achieved something. And of course at the moment I pat myself on the back about coming into harmony—-voila! It’s all gone. And the dance to find balance begins again.
