Publisher: Da Capo Press
I love to cook! I was Blessed with a mom who was not the best of cooks and who gave me free reign of the kitchen at the age of about six. Of course I didn’t follow recipes, I’m not sure I even knew what a recipe was. But I had a blast experimenting and learning how to cook on my own. As I got older I think I had natural talent and just learned by watching other people, reading cookbooks and when cooking shows started popping up on television, watching those in my spare time.
I love a good cookbook, but to this day I can honestly say I don’t follow many recipes. Even when I bake I always toss in a little somethin’ somethin’ that isn’t called for in the recipe or I improvise in some way. When I cook I might glance at a recipe but more times than not I don’t. I use cookbooks to inspire me and when I cook I think about the ingredients and just cook from my heart, Lord help us all!
Do I have “the art of cooking” mastered? Heck no! And that is why I was itching to review Kitchen on Fire! I have some techniques down pat and others I am a pitiful mess at! We’re all familiar with the proverb “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” The same is true in the culinary world! “Learn a recipe and you cook one meal. Master the art of cooking and you cook forever!”
Chefs MikeC. and Olivier, who have years of experience both in professional kitchens and teaching home cooks across the country, teach you how to become the best home chef in 12 weeks or less. This must have kitchen ‘bible’ is loaded with over 1,000 color photos and illustrations and includes tips, tricks and techniques to make every cooking skill a bit easier!
Learning to cook can seem like a daunting challenge but Chefs MikeC. and Olivier have broken it down chapter by chapter and made it fun and interesting! If you’ve already mastered knife skills them just skim that chapter and move onto Sautéing, Stir-Frying and Searing.
And for those of you who love the science aspect of everything there’s even a chapter called “The basic science of cooking”, which is honestly quite interesting. This is one book my girls are not getting their greedy little paws on. I may be a good cook, but Kitchen on Fire! taught me a thing or two. I’m not letting this one out of the house!
