For years I loathed steamed veggies thanks to the way old fashioned way my mom ‘steamed’ them.  Steaming involved placing beautiful, vibrant fresh veggies in a pan of water and boiling the life out of them until they turned to mush.  Is it any wonder kids of my generation hated veggies?  I didn’t know what a true steamed vegetable looked or tasted like until I was out on my own!  If you have an aversion to steamed veggies you’ve probably never had them cooked correctly!   Imagine a whole meal cooked to perfection in one appliance and all you need to do is place the ingredients in, turn the dial and voila!  Introducing the BPA-free Nesco 5 Qt Steamer with Rice Bowl!  It cooks meats, seafood, grains, eggs, sauces and yes steamed vegetables to perfection!

I was Blessed to receive a gorgeous stainless steel Nesco 5 Qt Steamer with Rice Bowl for review.  I’m always looking for ways to cook healthy!  I grill, bake and steam my foods. When I do use oil I use it very sparingly.  So when I find a method of cooking that allows me to cook without adding fat but still gives me flavorful, moist succulent food I like to share that with friends and family!

The feature I love most on the Nesco 5 Qt Steamer with Rice Bowl is the expander ring which fits the two steam bowls together allowing me to cook a whole meal in my steamer.  I can always use one steam bowl when cooking a small amount of food or just one dish if I need to.  But now that my family is larger I’m cooking larger meals again so the 5 quart size is perfect for us!  The 2-cup rice bowl is ideal for making grains and rice, but it’s also great for making hard, soft boiled and scrambled eggs.  I just add water to the base set the dial and in 15 minutes I have 6 hard boiled eggs without having to stand and watch the pot!

• Steam Bowl – 5 quart combined capacity. Durable, plastic construction offers clear view of food.  Dishwasher safe.
• Lid – Clear, durable plastic construction offers a clear view.  Dishwasher safe with handles for easy removal.
• Rice Bowl – Multi-purpose 2 cup bowl makes the fluffy rice, perfect oatmeal and delicious grains. Dishes prepared in sauces can be steamed using rice bowl. May be washed in dishwasher.
• Expander Ring – Durable plastic ring used to fit the Steam Bowls together when making multi-dish meals.
• Base Unit – Serves as the water reservoir and has a 60 minute, adjustable timer with automatic shutoff. Never ever place in the dishwasher!

Cooking-Steaming in the Nesco Food Steamer is pretty no-nonsense.  Just add the foods you’d like to cook to the steamer bowls.  The bowl on the bottom will cook faster so place foods that take the longest or larger foods on the bottom if using both bowls.  Always add plain water to the base when steaming.  Water amounts vary depending on the cooking time.  Be sure to check the owner’s manual but you’ll need between ¼ – 2 cups of water to steam 15 – 60 minutes.  If the base runs out of water the unit will automatically shut off.

Rice is always a bit tricky for me to make.  It either comes out a little sticky or it’s a bit too al dente.  Steamed rice in the Nesco 5 Qt Steamer with Rice Bowl is easy to make and comes out perfect!  Here’s a recipe for Lemon Spiked Rice made in the Food Steamer.  This recipes is easy to make and so much tastier than a boxed mix.  Serves – 3

Ingredients

• ½ cup uncooked long-grain rice
• ¾ cup water
• 1/3 tsp. salt (optional)
• Grated peel and juice of half a lemon
• 1/8 cup butter or margarine
• ¼ pint whipping cream, warmed
• 1/8 cup chopped fresh parsley
• ¼ tsp. white pepper

Directions

Place ¾ cup water in water reservoir (base of unit) of Nesco® Electric Food Steamer. In Rice Bowl, place rice, salt and water. Cover and steam 50 to 55 minutes.
When rice has steamed, transfer to Steamer Bowl. Combine butter, whipping cream and lemon peel in Rice Bowl.  Add 1/8 cup water to water reservoir. Cover and steam. Fold butter, cream and lemon juice into rice. Toss with parsley and pepper.
