Back to School the Eco-friendly way with TerraCycle!
My mom had a favorite saying “waste not, want not.” As a little girl I didn’t know what that meant. But as an adult I have a huge appreciation for my mom’s frugal lifestyle. Being a ‘child of the depression’, my mom didn’t waste anything. She wasn’t eco-friendly the way we think of it in today’s terms but nothing, absolutely nothing went to waste. So when I heard about TerraCycle it sang to my heart because I do live an eco-friendly lifestyle.
TerraCycle, Inc. is an international upcycling and recycling company that takes difficult-to recycle-packaging and turns it into a huge variety of really affordable, innovative products. TerraCycle works with more than 30 major brands in the United States (more on the way in other countries) to collect errr, well garbage.
Used packages and products like Drink Pouches, Candy Wrappers, Cookie Packaging, Cereal Bags, MP3 Players, Keyboards, Graphing Calculators and so much more are collected and repurposed into new products ranging from park benches to skincare!
I was Blessed to receive a TerraCycle Honey Graham Squares Backpack, TerraCycle 3-ring Sun Chips Binder Pencil Case & TerraCycle Baked Lays Lunch Sack for review. TerraCycle has teamed up with Nabisco, Kraft Cheese, Frito-Lay and GoGo squeeZ, to recycle and upcycle packaging from lunch boxes, including Capri Sun juice pouches and Lunchables. Families can learn how to reduce their impact on the environment while enjoying lunch treats like Chips Ahoy cookies and Kraft string cheese. Students then collect their wrappers, join a Brigade and send them to TerraCycle to earn money for their school. The wrappers are turned into really neat eco-friendly back to school items like lunchboxes, backpacks, pencils, notebooks, binders and folders!
My Little Guy starts school soon and one of the items he needs is a large backpack. The colorful TerraCycle Honey Graham Squares Backpack is perfect for him. It’s ideal for pre-school and grade school kids who need lots of room to transport their prize possessions to and from school. The main compartment unzips to reveal a large inside compartment. On the outside is a handy zippered pocket to hold necessities close at hand. Size: 10″ wide x 13″ tall x 5″ deep. The entire backpack wipes clean with a damp sponge. Price ~ $14.99

I got such a kick out of the TerraCycle 3-ring Sun Chips Binder Pencil Case! Back in the day when I went to elementary school my pencil case was ugly. This one is adorable. Every time you enjoy any Frito-Lay® snack, please save the bag and send it in to TerraCycle™, and they will upcycle the pre and post-consumer chip bag packaging into cool new school products!
The TerraCycle 3-ring Binder Pencil Case zips all the way across the top and has three rings so it will fit securely in binders. That means pens, pencils and erasers won’t get lost. I opened my case and expected a plain white interior. Other companies always have a plain white interior. NOT TerraCycle! The inside is just as beautiful as the outside, displaying the same Sun Chips packaging! This sturdy and eco-friendly pencil case wipes clean with a damp cloth. Price ~ $2.99

I don’t know who wanted the TerraCycle Baked Lays Lunch Sack more, Hubby the Hubster or My Little Guy! My Little Guy won! He’s starting preschool in the fall and I’ll be packing his lunch. How darned adorable is this lunch sack? The “baby” already has a metal lunch box with his name on it! He loved that one so much he took it and put his little cars and action figures in that one.
The TerraCycle Baked Lays Lunch Sack will be used for school! It’s insulated, which will be really nice, especially for the first month or two of school since it will still be so darned hot here in Georgia. I’ll be assured that his food will stay chilled. (Keeps hot foods hot too.) Outside pocket holds napkin, straw and utensils. Two Velcro closures keep bag sealed tightly closed. Dimensions: 7.5″ W x 9.5″ T x 3.75″ D. Price ~ $14.99
Any school or community organization can visit www.terracycle.net to sign up for a Brigade and start sending trash in for free. For every piece of waste sent in, schools will earn two points, which can be put toward charity gifts or converted to money for charity or the school.
