Summer is coming to a close and I find myself yearning for comfort food once again. Veggie soups and stews, baked pasta dishes and even roasted garlic are among the dishes that I love to cook come cooler weather. There’s just something about the aroma of these dishes wafting through the air that makes my tummy rumble and brings my family to the table the first time I holler “dinners ready!”
Unlike the television and stereo system, the slow cooker is one gadget that’s still within my techy grasp. There are only a few knobs to master so I’m not confounded by its electronic wizardry! All I need to do is toss my ingredients into the crockie in the morning and when dinner rolls around I’m able to waltz to the table like everyone else!
But….I run out of ideas and recipes! Best of Bridge Slow Cooker Cookbook is chock full of 200 slow cooker recipes. Whether you’re new at slow cooking or you’ve been using your slow cooker for years like I have Best of Bridge Slow Cooker Cookbook will be become a favorite in your kitchen! If you don’t already have a slow cooker please read chapter 1, Slow Cooker 101 before heading out to the store to purchase one. In this instance size really does matter. In addition, you may require a certain shape slow cooker depending on the types of foods you cook most often. There’s lots of great information in the section titled Buying a Slow Cooker!

Acorn squash is a favorite fall veggie of mine. I usually bake acorn squash but this slow cooker recipe looks delicious and I love the addition of the hot pepper flakes! I love my food highly seasoned. Try it and let me know what you think!
Spicy Orange Squash
A simple side dish for grilled pork chops, chicken or salmon
Serves 4

Ingredients
- 1 small acorn squash, halved, seeds and membrane removed
- ½ cup water
- 2 tbsp packed brown sugar
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp hot pepper flakes
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- Grated zest of ½ orange
- Freshly squeezed juice of 1 orange
Directions
Place squash cut side up in a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker. Pour water around squash. In a bowl, combine brown sugar, salt, hot pepper flakes, butter, orange zest and orange juice. Pour into squash halves. Cover and cook on Low for 4 to 5 hours, until squash is tender. Cut each half into 2 wedges. Serve with juices spooned over squash.
