Hershey’s Chocolate has always been a part of my life as far back as I can remember. I don’t recall my mom buying any other chocolate, Hershey’s was her favorite and it was mine too! When you’re a child of 4 or 5 you’re really impressionable and certain things make a huge impact on your life and leave lasting memories. I was just about that age when my family and I visited Hershey Pennsylvania for the very first time!
Back then the actual Hershey Chocolate factory was open for the public to tour. Even as a little girl I couldn’t get over how impeccably clean the building was. As a matter of fact the entire town was beautifully kept. I didn’t have the words for it back then, but I realize today that the entire area of Derry Township (I thought it was dairy as a little girl) is proud of Hershey’s and what they’ve created. I’ve been back to beautiful Hershey Pennsylvania as an adult, and I can tell you, it really is the sweetest place on earth!
Of course seeing all that chocolate being poured and molded amazed me as a little girl. I can still remember the incredible smell of chocolate in the air! No matter the time of day, no matter where in the city you were, the scent of chocolate filled the air. I wondered what it was like to live there.

And then I saw something that I’ll never forget! The main street in Hershey was lined with Hershey’s Chocolate KISSES Lamp Posts. Every other one was wrapped in tin foil and was a huge replica of a bite-size Hershey’s KISS! What confused my little four-year old mind was that in between the tin foil wrapped Lamp Posts were huge, realistic unwrapped Hershey’s KISSES Lamp Posts. I swore that the chocolate aroma wafting through the air was coming from those lamp posts. I really thought they were made of Hershey’s Chocolate and couldn’t understand why they weren’t melting. It occurred to me when I was a little older and happened to be nibbling on a Hershey’s KISS that those lamp posts were not made of chocolate after all. What a sweet memory!
The Hershey’s KISSES Lamp Posts still proudly line the main street of Hershey! I got to see them a few years ago while visiting the Hershey’s Test Kitchen. I know they’re not really made of Hershey’s Chocolate but they sure do look real!

I am a teacher, and every year in February, I make a board with Hershey kiss shaped cut-outs and cover them with foil. I tell the students that I am going to pick my favorite student, and the next day when they come in, the flag will tell who my favorite student is, and why…. of course, they are ALL my favorite, and I work hard to find the perfect reasons why! I post it under the the title- A Sweet Class… of course I surprise them all with really Hershey kisses as well. Something I look forward to- and so do they- every year.
