You are what you eat. That old adage may be a cliché but it’s the absolute truth. For years I believed that a diet devoid of fat was good for me. I’m not talking low fat; I mean a diet with almost zero grams of fat. My hair, skin and nails suffered the consequences of my actions by becoming unbearably dry. Creams and lotions help but those are topical. The solution is eating a diet rich in nutrient dense foods that’s right for my body.
The Healthy Skin Diet is a common sense, flexible program designed to help you eat your way to beautiful skin. Whatever skin condition you’re suffering with can be improved in just a few short weeks. If you’re plagued with skin conditions like dermatitis, eczema or rosacea; The 8-Week Healthy Skin Diet has suggestions targeted for your needs and more than 100 recipes and menus to beautify your skin naturally.
Moisturize your skin, from within
Certain fats moisturize your skin. I was so brainwashed back in the 1980′s that I was afraid to drizzle olive oil on my salad. While a diet high in saturated fats like butter, cream, full fat cheese and high fat meats should be restricted; there are other fats that are necessary for overall health and beautiful skin. Unsaturated fats found in flaxseed oil, fish oil, olive oil, avocado and almonds are considered to be “healthy fats”. These monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats help regulate cholesterol and are vital for body function.
Tips for eating fats for good skin health
- Lower your saturated fat consumption.
- Increase your consumption of polyunsaturated omega-3 fats, which is found in flax and fish oils.
- Avoid trans-fats. These hydrogenated vegetable oils are often found in fried foods, chips and bakery products.
- Limit poor quality oils like margarine, canola, and refined vegetable oils
I drink smoothies quite often because they’re so tasty. With just a few tweaks I’m enjoying a refreshing Papaya Beauty Smoothie that’s not only delicious, it’s great for my skin!
This thick, tropical, gluten-free smoothie is a delicious and refreshing drink. It contains vitamin C–rich papaya, which enhances protein digestion; bananas, which are a great source of fiber; and ginger and lime, which are alkalizing. The only thing missing from this recipe is protein, which is vital for firm skin, so ideally you should use this shake as a digestion-enhancing appetizer and have it 15 to 30 minutes before a protein-rich meal. If consumed before dinner, it may also aid weight loss because flaxseed oil triggers the satiety response.
Papaya Beauty Smoothie
Makes 1 large or 2 small servings
Ingredients
- ½ cup pure apple juice (sugar- and preservative-free)
- ½ cup water
- 1 cup chopped papaya (optional: pre-freeze chunks)
- 1 frozen banana (peel and chop before freezing)
- ½ lime, juiced (about 4 tsp.)
- 1/4 tsp. grated gingerroot (optional)
- 1 tbsp. ground flax seeds or flaxseed oil
- 1 tbsp. lecithin granules (GMO-free soy)
Directions
- Combine apple juice, water, papaya, banana, lime juice and ginger in a blender and blend on high until smooth. Add flax seeds and lecithin and blend for a further 20 seconds. Serve and drink immediately. For a thinner mixture, add extra water. Tip: Acne-prone people may need to use less or no flaxseed oil.
