I never considered myself a car snob. I grew up with a Dad who told me that air conditioning was 4-40. When I asked him what that was he told me drive 40 mph and roll all 4 windows down. You better believe my first car was no frills. When I learned that I would be reviewing the 2013 Kia Soul! I wasn’t sure this was going to be a match made in heaven though because I’ve been driving a sports car since 2001.
I had the impression that the 2013 Kia Soul! was a very stuffy vehicle for older folks ready for retirement despite the fact that my 22-year old daughter owns a Kia Soul. Sweet Pea, who has gone from a devil-may-care teenager to a responsible college graduate and soon-to-be law school entrant did her research before purchasing a brand new 2012 Kia Soul. She was on a tight budget but needed a spacious, safe vehicle for her and Charlotte “Charlie” Brown. After careful and painstaking consideration my daughter purchased a Kia Soul and loves it.

Hitting The Highway With The 2013 Kia Soul!
When my review car arrived I was a little taken back by the color. I’ve gotta hand it to Kia; they really hit the nail on the head when they named this shade Alien. When my three-year old grandson saw the Kia Soul! he shouted, “I wanna ride in the alien car!” He couldn’t wait to get himself into his car seat and hit the road.
The Soul is very spacious offering a large back seat with room to spread out. This was the first time Hubby and I were able to go on a double date with my sister and brother-in-law and take one car. My brother-in-law is very tall and had no problems maneuvering in and out of the back seat. My sister who is very finicky commented on how comfortable, fun and stylish the Kia Soul was to ride in. I was impressed with how easy it was to get in and out of the front seat, a very important feature for the elderly or someone who has mobility issues.
I’m A Soul Mom!
The 2013 Kia Soul! is larger than the car I normally drive so I was concerned that driving the Soul would require an adjustment period. Nope! The Soul has incredible pick up which I didn’t expect. I stepped on that gas and there was no hesitation at all.
The ride is smooth and quiet with the only noise coming from the awesome Infinity Audio System that includes a center speaker, subwoofer, external amplifier and speaker. I’m just getting started! That alien car was rockin’ last week! In addition to the incredible sound system the front speakers light in a variety of colors turning this car into a real party on wheels! I’ve never had so much fun driving a car as I did driving the 2013 Kia Soul!
Awards & Safety Features On The 2013 Kia Soul!
Safety is first and foremost at Kia. There’s no price gouging either. All 2013 Kia Soul models include: Four-Wheel Antilock Disc Brakes w/Antilock Brake System, Electronic Stability Control, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution, Dual Front Advanced Airbags, Dual Front Seat-Mounted Airbags, Full-Length Side Curtain Airbags, Front Active Head Rest System, and Hill-start assist; a feature which keeps the car from rolling backwards when you’re on an incline and move your foot from the brake to the accelerator. I knew the Kia Soul was a safe car, which was one of the reasons my daughter purchased her car but it’s nice to know that the Soul was recently listed as one of the 10 best vehicles for pet safety at a great price on Edmunds.com.
You Got Soul – That’s What I Like About You!
The 2013 Kia Soul! is very affordable with a base sticker price of $19,900. It comes equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission, 2.0 ltr, 4-cylinder engine. With such a low sticker price I expected bare bones. That’s not the case. In addition to all the safety features I mentioned above the Kia Exclaim features 18″ low profile performance tires with alloy wheels, which look sweet and add to the great handling of the car.
The one feature I love and will sorely miss on the Soul is the Rear Camera Display and HD Radio™. The Rear Camera Display gives me a clear view of the area behind the car, letting me see any obstacles I would otherwise miss. I will never purchase another car without a Rear Camera Display. The thing I love most about the 2013 Kia Soul! is that it’s just a fun car to drive! How can a car with a Hamster for a pitchman be pretentious? This Urban Crossover, built with safety in mind is meant to enjoy! I relaxed, let the Navigation system and Sirius XM handle the directions and I cranked the radio up and howled like a maniac all week! The week ended with my brother-in-law saying “like old times Les, do you ever finish a song before turning the dial?” Good times!
